01:30 pm: During the week, there seems to be less and less to say.
Anyway, we were greeted by the news that Matthew had invited a few friends to a party. At least in theory, there should have been about 15, but when it came to it, there were getting on for 50. Considering the light level of supervision, I think we did well to dispose of everyone by just about midnight.
Why do people think that every single example of alcohol to be found is fair game for drinking, and that it is acceptable to take away any cans that haven't been drunk by hometime?
And then this morning, a birthday for me.
Books, DVDs, an Amazon voucher...this afternoon to see Shrek the Third and then off for a curry this evening with a couple from church.
But mainly, a quiet day.

A heinous crime from my culture, even when I was a young thing. Just cannot imagine the circumstances where that would ever be acceptable. Not sure it is even the done thing now.

Apparently it's OK because some other people brought drinks to the party. I don't understand it, and neither does Matthew.
He also points out that the ones who nicked the drinks were not, of course, the ones who had brought any.
In Port Vila, on the (rare) occasions that people tried to leave with a bottle or two, they were hailed with "Hey! This isn't ####ing McDonalds! No ####ing takeaways!"

Now I really am shocked. Call me naive but it truly did not occur to me for a single second that it wasn't the folk that bought it in the first place. Think that constitutes theft, does it not? Oh, things sometimes seem so complicated, what young people - and their parents - have to deal with. Such a shame Matthew had to deal with this stuff on what should just have been a fun night. Kinda spoils everything.

Well, overall there were a few problems with the number of people who were there. Fortunately, they were a reasonably well behaved bunch, who presumably knew that if necessary, we would certainly call for the full force of the law, so they were reasonably compliant.
Damage was limited to some superficial mess, cans everywhere, one pyrex bowl and the ripping of some window blinds which, frankly, won't be missed.
The evening was something of an education for us, and especially for Matthew. Older readers will note the difference between teen parties in our day and today: the main difference is communication. If you didn't know a party was happening, you just didn't know: these days, supplementary invitations to friends of friends, whether welcome or not, are just a text message away.

I take it you informed the ones refusing to leave that the pool of acid out the back was simply vodka for them to swim in.

Well, all things considered, that would have worked.

Birthdays are a big nothing much to me, but others do seem to enjoy theirs. I hope you are one of those who have a good time and welcome another year with the joy it deserves.

Live well, be happy, enjoy.
