On the train

This morning, the trains were much quieter. I guess this is because a
lot of people are taking today off to take advantage of the long
weekend. It's the so-called Whit holiday, though in fact that festival
has been and gone. Nevertheless, I'll be grateful for a day off, for
obvious reasons, even though it means a day without pay. Some things
are beyond price. And I don't mean MasterCard.
Elsewhere, it's surprising that Nation States, evidently popular five
years ago, is still going strong. I don't know of many sites that
continue, largely unchanged, for free, for so long. LJ is one, of
course, but that's not free if you want to take full advantage of it,
and it's not so unchanged, as its ownership keeps changing hands. Any
others that spring to mind?
Anyhow, the weekend is nearly upon us. What exciting things will
happen? I hope I can look forward to a weekend less exciting than the
last one. And even though it's less crowded than usual, we're still
full and standing at Farringdon. That is all.

On an express train

Another busy day. I do quite enjoy what I do, most of the time. But it
will be so good to be back home. I'm on the 1640 to Manchester P, but
I'll be baling out at Crewe to catch a Chester train. The folks at
work seemed to think I should leave a bit early, so I did. Who am I to
argue? And with the Bank Holiday ahead, saver tickets are valid on all
trains, so as one colleague often says, "it would be rude not to..."
So I'm on a train a bit earlier than usual, and I'm looking forward to
changing at Crewe and getting home, probably more than any other
weekend since I started this up and down the country lark again. We're
currently at Lichfield Trent Valley, where not many trains I catch
stop. Next: Stafford, then Crewe. Three days of relaxation. Or not. I
don't think it will be as relaxing as I might have expected a
fortnight ago. Sunday morning, leading the service. That won't be too
bad, but it might be harder than it seems as I type it now. We'll see.
That is all.
