Chomsky

While I was at high school, I was inspired most by two of our teachers - their real names, surprisingly, were Smith and Jones.

Mr Smith inspired my love of mathematics and as a sideline also got me interested in the Ring cycle of operas by Mr Richard Wagner.

Mr Jones, a history teacher by trade, also taught general studies. One of the most interesting writers we studied under Mr Jones was a maverick who turned the ideas of the time upside down with his manifesto of "small is beautiful". I wrote an essay about it at the time, and it's now on the web at http://baptism.co.nz/is/small.html along with some of my other work. The maverick's name was Noam Chomsky and he's still writing. His writing about the events of September 2001 were an inspiration to me. You can read some of his most rceent writings at http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0313-07.htm and http://www.nion.us/nion.htm - enjoy!
